I want to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year at Bridgeport Middle School! We are honored to have the privilege of partnering with you in your child’s education and are eager to maintain ongoing collaboration with you on any way we can serve your child’s needs.
Two emphases for BMS this year will be: 1) Developing students’ language skills across the curriculum, and 2) Nurturing positive character qualities in all BMS students. We will continue to accelerate our students toward future success with technology and 21st century skills. However, positive character and the ability to effectively communicate are “old school” skills that will always stand the test of time and are vital to our students’ future success.
BMS is partnering with world-renowned writing specialist John Collins to work with our staff to better integrate writing across the curriculum. Writing is a comprehensive practice that actively engages students with their content, develops their ability to communicate effectively, organizes their thoughts, and teaches them how to craft an argument. BMS will also be implementing the PEG writing program to provide prompt online feedback to students on their compositions.
Middle School years are as much an emotional adjustment as they are an academic transition. We are thrilled to introduce a new student mentorship program at BMS to serve this period in our students’ lives. Each 6th grade student has been assigned to a 7th or 8th grade mentor for the 2016-2017 school year. Student mentors are here to help make our 6th graders’ school year a positive experience as they transition to BMS. All students will also participate in a monthly character development program based on Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. We are excited to witness the success of our students as they participate in these programs.
BMS is also excited to welcome two new additions to our campus administration. Mrs. Mallory Marr is our new Assistant Principal after serving the past three years at BMS as an ELA teacher, Coach, and ESL Coordinator. She brings a diverse background and unique ability to work with all students. We are also excited to have Mrs. Patina Berardi serving as our new Counselor. Mrs. Berardi has been an outstanding History teacher at BMS for the past two years. She will be an invaluable asset in serving your child’s academic and emotional success at BMS.
We strive to maintain ongoing communication with our students’ parents in a variety of ways. Please check our website for updated information on school events and activities. The “Parents” tab on our website will allow you to access the weekly “Parent Huddle” newsletter for updated calendars, events, and news about BMS. We also maintain a campus Facebook and Twitter page with updated information on school events. We will also actively use a campus “Remind” to directly text parents on campus news and events. Parents can receive Remind notices by texting “@h322k” to the number “81010.”
Thank you for blessing us with the opportunity to serve your child. We look forward to an amazing school year!
